32 million euro for top-level technological research

NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) have awarded six new Perspectief programmes. The specific programme ADS researchers from CWI, UvA and VU are involved in will lead to more efficient deep-learning systems. With Perspectief, NWO is challenging scientists to establish a close partnership with industry and social organisations. It concerns multidisciplinary research with a special emphasis on application. Together the parties will develop new research lines linked to the top sectors.

About the project:

A computer that recognises dangerous situations on security footage is possible with deep-learning automated systems. However, before this kind of system can operate independently, you have to design and train it. Additionally, considerable computing power is required. ‘Efficient Deep Learning’ will use examples from daily life to make deep learning far more efficient. The techniques will also then be applied for other automatic visual inspections, tissue analysis, smart maintenance of equipment and intelligent hearing aids that can handle noisy environments.

The ADS senior researchers that will participate in ‘Efficient Deep Learning Systems’ are: Sander Bohte (CWI), Theo Gevers, Cees Snoek and Max Welling (IvI, UvA), Henri Bal, Mark Hoogendoorn (VU).
