We are PostNL, the number one service provider in mail and logistics. We deliver parcels every day and mail five days a week. On a weekday, we deliver on average 675,000 parcels and 8 million letters throughout the Benelux. We are the indispensible link for our customers between senders and recipients, and the connector between the physical and the digital world. PostNL is transforming from a traditional mail business into a logistics service provider. Big data is essential in our changing organisation, as it enables us to take fact-based decisions. The work of data analysts is extremely relevant here.
For more than 200 years, we ensure that mail is reliable and accessible in the Netherlands. With our more than 44,000 employees, we are one of the largest private employers in the Netherlands. PostNL has the largest and most modern logistics mail and parcel network in the Benelux. Our mail and parcel network in Italy is expanding, and we come second on the mail market in Germany. In addition, we are active throughout the world with our cross-border activities under the name of Spring.
By now, we are doing a lot more than delivering mail and parcels. We help our business customers to be successful, for example, by providing support in direct and online marketing, robotised order processing, or temperature-controlled medical transport. And we develop services that make consumers’ lives easier, such as collecting parcels at home that consumers wish to return, delivering flowers and meals, or delivering and fitting kitchens and white goods.
Big data essential for PostNL transformation
PostNL is progressive in using big data and is making great strides with this. We are always aiming for higher service delivery quality, and use algorithms to predict such things as delivery complaints and missing parcels. We consider it important to share what we learn from such cases, for instance, with Big Data Alliance partners. We also cooperate with other organisations to develop even better models and data.
We examine continuously how we can improve our services to our customers. Our Analytics Centre of Excellence (ACE) is the central expertise centre for data analysis. ACE helps business units improve processes to ensure that such things as customer satisfaction increase. The ACE data analyses generate valuable new insights and algorithms enabling us to better design operational processes or sales activities.

Do you have a background and interest in data analysis? We are always searching for new colleagues with statistical knowledge and skills, and experience with programming (Python and R). Knowledge of logistics, HR or Finance is also a real advantage. Working for ACE means working on challenging cases across the company. We are also looking for specialists who would like to start as data analysts within HR, Commerce or Finance. At PostNL you’ll be working with a fully-designed data analytics lab in Amazon Web Services (AWS), within which you can make use of all tools such as Python, R and Pyspark.
