Daan Kolkman is a Post-doctoral researcher at the Jheronimus Academy of Data science and a freelance data scientist. Daan holds a masters degree in Economic Geography from Utrecht University and received a PhD degree from the University of Surrey for his work on computational models that inform government decision making.
Previously, he worked at the Center for Research in Social Simulation (CRESS) in the UK and was a fellow in the London-based Science to Data Science (S2DS) programme. Daan was awarded first place in the Dutch Chamber of Commerce “KvK-Beta” startup competition.
Daan’s data science work revolves around economic geography and includes topics such as location strategy support, retail and SME risk modeling, sales-recommendation engines, and social sensoring. He has worked on data science projects with McDonalds, Mark & Spencers, Insights4Action, Local Data Company, Locatus, and Sowifi.
His academic focus is on the effective application of data science to inform strategic organizational decision making. Daan has collaborated on academic projects with the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Energy and Climate Change, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, the Netherlands Land Registry, and the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.
