Simme Douwe Flapper studied theoretical physics, mathematics, econometrics, biology as well as industrial engineering and management science. He has a PhD in physics, an MSc in industrial engineering and management science and a BA in biology. He worked 3 years for the Dutch Ministery of Environment and Housing, where he was responsible for the design and implementation of information systems for the registration of rest flows and emissions. During this time he was a member of the Dutch Commission on Emission Registration. Research Since 1993 he is doing research on the planning and control, information and organisational aspects of reuse at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) , in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He has been invited to participate in a number of projects sponsored by the European Union, including PAWS (Product Acquisition from Waste Streams), RECAM (Recycling of Carpet Materials) and REVLOG (Reverse Logistics). Among the many companies he did or is doing projects with in this field are OEM’s, third party service providers and master organisations, including Dell, Océ, HP, Philips, Printronix, NashuaTec, Whirlpool, Goodyear, WAVIN, Synprodo, Philip Morris, Heineken, BASF, DSM, Akzo Nobel, Nike, NedCar, GM, DaimlerChrysler, Dutch Railways, KLM, DHL and UNIVAR. He also has been involved in the setup of the Dutch network for the collection and processing of discarded white and brown goods, as well as in a similar project in Lancashire county (UK), and in the setup of the Dutch network for the collection and processing of discarded batteries. Other research areas are planning and control of production and distribution activities in the process industries in general, in which area he worked/works together with among others Akzo Nobel, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, Corus, DSM, Nestle, Campina, Koch Industries, Centecor, and planning and control of human resource availability, including hiring, firing, (re)training, contracting, in which he did or is doing projects together with among others Paccar, NedCar, Océ, NashuaTec, KLM-Cargo.
